Released on 1st April this year on the enterprising Israeli OutNow Recordings label, the Yoni Kretzmer 2Bass Quartet's Weight features a rather unusual line-up of tenor sax, two basses and drums, essentially expanding on the classic tenor sax, bass and drum trio.

The album was specifically conceived and written by Kretzmer for bassists Sean Conly and Reuben Radding and drummer Mike Pride. Kretzmer himself is one of the most prolific and enterprising of the younger Israeli jazz saxophonists, with a string of albums under his belt already, both in Israel and the US.

The sound of the unusual quartet still remains familiar enough, yet also different enough with the addition of the second bass to make it interesting and even stand out. One would presume that the title, Weight, refers to the added weight the second bass lends to the overall sound.

The most striking aspect of this album is, how remarkably accessible it is. Stylistically, one might say that it often reminds of Ayler's and perhaps Dolphy's brand of jazz more than of Coleman's. Yet, it remains highly individualistic, personal even. There is a lot of feeling, a lot of passion in this music, expecially from Kretzmer's tenor.

The extensive soloing all round is as excellent as the ensemble playing. The basses are given plenty of scope and use it very well. Altogether, Weight is a fascinating album.

The consistency throughout is good, and this album is more than compelling. It is not just the two basses that make this album so interesting and even enjoyable, rather, it is the music of Weight as a whole. An altogether well conceived and superbly executed album.

Anyone seriously into modern/avant-garde jazz cannot afford to ignore Yoni Kretzmer 2Bass Quartet's Weight for their collection, surely. And even more general jazz aficionados may find it an enjoyable listen.
