Rebecca Kaplan & Pete Rushefsky - On The Paths
Released in 2004 on Yiddishland Records, Rebecca Kaplan & Pete Rushefsky's On The Paths: Yiddish Songs With Tsimbl is, as the title suggests, an album of Yiddish songs with tsimbl accompaniment, with several tsimbl instrumental pieces. Pete Rushefsky will already be familiar here from his album with Elie Rosenblatt, Tsimbl un Fidl. One of the leading revivalists of the Jewish tsimbl and probably its finest younger exponent, it is always a pleasure to hear a new recording by Pete Rushefsky. On the present example, he is teamed up with Yiddish singer Rebecca Kaplan.
The material on On The Paths consists of ten traditional or credited songs and one original song by Ms. Kaplan, plus five solo pieces for tsimbl, of which two are Rushefsky originals. The arrangements are excellent and it makes for a refreshing change to hear Yiddish songs accompanied only by tsimbl. Rebecca Kaplan gives a very fine performance in interpreting the songs in a light, unforced fashion. The tsimbl accompaniments by Pete Rushefsky are very finely judged and never dominate. His solos are adventurous as well as sometimes ambitious, but Rushefsky carries it off to perfection. They are a delight that is easily worth the price of admission by itself.
Many of the songs are less well known, and it is a great delight to hear this wonderful material and particularly in such excellent arrangements with tsimbl. Rebecca Kaplan & Pete Rushefsky's On The Paths is a completely consistent album with no weak tracks, and it would be not only very difficult to pick particular favourites but also somewhat unfair. It is a thoroughly enchanting album. The liner notes include full Yiddish and romanised Yiddish lyrics as well as English translations, a great help to those of us not fluent in Yiddish, and this adds further to the enjoyment.
Rebecca Kaplan & Pete Rushefsky's On The Paths: Yiddish Songs With Tsimbl makes a great addition to any good Yiddish song collection.
