Bethany Jameson's Cabaret Vérité Live At The Royal National Theatre Foyer,
South Bank, London SE1, Sunday 3rd February 2013

A much sought after matinee performance at The Royal National Theatre Foyer yesterday afternoon provided a perfect opportunity to catch up again with chanteuse extraordinaire Bethany Jameson and the full Cabaret Vérité line-up of accordion maestro Romano Viazzani, violin virtuoso Declan Daly, and outstanding bassist, Ben Hazleton. And, of course, to get a full set of splendid illustrations of the 'team' from Artist in Residence at Rainlore's World, Alban Low.

Bethany Jameson's Cabaret Vérité Live At The Royal National Theatre Foyer promised, and of course delivered, a unique cabaret cocktail of fabulous French chansons, wicked tangos and comedy songs from their two shows, On the Banks of the Seine and Soirée Parisienne.

The NT's foyer was packed by the time the performance got under way. One could almost have forgotten this was the NT's foyer and instead imagine being in a cabaret cafe or some such. Ms. Jameson created the perfect atmosphere and transported one there. With a mix of a supreme vocal and a sublime acting performance, not forgetting the superb accompaniment, Bethany Jameson's Cabaret Vérité Live At The Royal National Theatre Foyer delivered a breath-taking show that seemed to totally captivate the audience.

Ms. Jameson has the perfect balance of a superb voice and acting skills, and an immense stage presence. She is nothing short of sensational, an Anglo-French, British Edith Piaf. Add in the perfection that is the support of Viazzani, Daly and Hazleton, and what you have is an immense class act that is very hard to match.

The second set opened with an instrumental interlude in the form of Ástor Piazzolla's iconic 1974 tango nuevo, Libertango, in an outstanding arrangement by Viazzani. This could almost be regarded as Viazzani's signature piece - he performed the accordion part on Grace Jones' I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango) on tour, and more recently also recorded a solo accordion arrangement that was breath-taking. As, indeed, was yesterday's performance with Daly and Hazleton.

Pulses were set racing, possibly dangerously so, by Ms. Jameson's second entrance, in a dress that perhaps ought to come with a health warning and looked sensational. Ms. Jameson looked as stunning as her performance was.

Adding to the cafe atmosphere were a couple of senior couples who very sweetly and admirably took to the floor to dance to some of the tangos, and did so admirably well. Bravo!

Yesterday's Bethany Jameson's Cabaret Vérité Live At The Royal National Theatre Foyer was all that it had promised and more. Above all, it was an exquisite, and exquisitely enjoyable, performance that was highly memorable. A show that must have done the National very proud indeed. And left an audience very happy.

Bethany Jameson's Cabaret Vérité should soon be back at The Green Note in Camden Town, where they are featured regularly, so do look out.

In closing - a big thank you to Rainlore's World's Artist in Residence Alban Low for the use of his brilliant illustrations of the gig and all his hard work in preparing them.
