DJ Ritu and A World in London Rule! If you're not yet familiar with DJ Ritu and her wonderful show, A World in London, where have you been? AWiL, as it's also known to its fans, has always been and still is the best world music show to have graced British airwaves yet. When the late Charlie Gillett became too ill to continue with his Sound of the City world music show on BBC Local Radio station BBC London in 2005, DJ Ritu more than filled his shoes with A World in London. A fresh, far broader show, AWiL was an instant hit and attracted a large number of loyal fans. Anything from world beat to folk - oh yes, no fear of the f-word here! - to world jazz, DJ Ritu has it all and then some! When in late 2010 BBC London wanted to concentrate on 'talk' based programming, AWiL was sadly dropped, with the last show there having gone out on 1st January 2011. However, DJ Ritu kept the faith with her loyal fans and not only made one of her last shows on BBC London (4th December, 2010, in two parts) available via Soundcloud and Mixcloud, but also produced a series of new shows from 4th March to 8th July 2011, available from Mixcloud and, later, also as podcasts on Radio Groovalizacion. All of these shows were also embedded in the Specialist Music on BBC Local Radio News pages on this site from 23rd February 2011 onwards. This page gathers together all these shows as a retrospective. We start at top right with A World in London, 4th December 2010, Parts 1 and 2. And this week, there's a full baker's dozen of fabulous tracks from around the globe to listen to! Including a beautiful traditional Ladino song from jazz bass maestro (of Chick Corea's 1990s band Origin fame) and singer Avishai Cohen. Ladino is a body of poetry and songs in the Judeo-Spanish or Judezmo language of the Sephardi or Spanish Jews. Still popular from North Africa to Turkey, these songs' lyrics (and poems) often go back to medieval times, although the tunes are of more recent, mainly Ottoman Turkish art music, origin. Avishai Cohen's (not to be confused with the jazz trumpeter of the same name!) new album Seven Seas, which this song comes from, is incidentally to die for! |

In this 21st May 2011 A World In London, DJ Ritu pays tribute to broadcaster Big George, and showcases the latest prime tracks from The Balkans, Middle East, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the melting pot of London! And as you can see and hear, it's another fabulous selection of tracks! The current show features CDs by the fabulous Palestinian oud maestros Le Trio Joubran, Tamikrest, and Cornershop, as well as the amazing Teymour Housego, whose album Haunting Bazaar was reviewed on this site last week as mentioned by DJ Ritu on the show. Spiced! - the finest selection of Indian beats, from the genres of Bollywood, bhangra, and Asian fusion. Spiced! was first broadcast by Funkhaus Europa in Germany. Then DJ Ritu presents us with a fabulous A World in London Sona Jobarteh Special June 2011 on Mixcloud . Talented singer/composer and unique kora-player, Sona Jobarteh, joined Ritu at SOAS Radio this month. In this exclusive interview she talks about her excellent new album, Fasiya, and her life-travels through music from West Africa, to The Royal College of Music, SOAS, and more!
